Calgary, Alberta (Mar 04, 2011)… The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) is working with Daylight Energy Ltd. at the scene of a sour oil well fire 11 km southwest of Lodgepole. The well is licensed to Daylight Energy Ltd. for up to 15 per cent hydrogen sulphide. The fire began at 10:20 a.m. on March 4 during well servicing operations. Daylight has commissioned well control specialists who are on site.
The oil well is on fire. There is no threat to public safety at this time. Air monitoring units are sampling at the site and in the vicinity and have detected no more than trace levels of hydrogen sulphide or sulphur dioxide at this time. ERCB inspectors are on site and an investigation into the incident will be conducted, as is the normal practice.
A roadblock has been set up on the lease road and on Tower Road near Highway 620. The closest resident to the well is 7 km away. There have been no injuries resulting from the incident. The ERCB has not received any odour complaints from the public at this time. All appropriate authorities have been notified.
