ERCB responding to Penn West Energy pipeline release

For immediate release

Calgary, Alberta (Oct 09, 2011)… The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) is responding to a Penn West Energy pipeline release that occurred on Friday, October 7, 2011, about 28 kilometres southwest of Swan Hills.

The pipeline released produced water, some of which has leaked into First Creek. The ERCB is working with the operator to confirm spill volumes.

The pipeline has been shut in and clean up has begun. The ERCB is closely monitoring the incident and will continue to work with the company and other agencies to ensure all appropriate clean up and mitigation measures are taking place.

There were no injuries and no direct public impact as a result of the produced water pipeline release.

All appropriate agencies have been notified.
