Update: Alberta Energy Regulator responds to sour gas incident in Turner Valley

For immediate release

Calgary, Alberta (Jun 20, 2013)…

Just after 10 a.m. on June 20, Legacy Oil and Gas notified the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) of a gas release from a pipeline licensed for 1.8 per cent hydrogen sulphide (H2S). The release point is within the boundaries of the Town of Turner Valley.

AER staff immediately deployed to the site and are working with the Town of Turner Valley and the responsible company. The release is ongoing; the AER is working with the company to control the release and stop the flow of gas.

On site air monitoring has confirmed that, to this point, sour gas levels have not posed a threat to public safety; however, some odours may be present. As a precautionary measure until air monitoring could confirm levels, the company and the Town of Turner Valley evacuated some residents and asked others to shelter in place.

For information on the status of evacuations, contact the Town of Turner Valley.

During an incident, the AER works with the company, local authority, and other provincial agencies to coordinate efficient and effective response by all parties involved. The AER expects the responsible party to respond immediately and effectively to all energy incidents and to limit impacts to the public, property, and the environment. The AER will hold the responsible party accountable for the incident and its impacts.

The Alberta Energy Regulator ensures the safe, efficient, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of hydrocarbon resources over their entire life cycle. This includes allocating and conserving water resources, managing public lands, and protecting the environment while providing economic benefits for all Albertans.
