National and International Relations

The AER’s vision is to be recognized for regulatory excellence, ensuring the safe, environmentally responsible development of energy resources for the benefit of all Albertans.

Our focus is on the province of Alberta and we are committed to being the best possible regulator for the benefit of all Albertans. In order to do this effectively, we must look outside of our provincial borders. Energy is a global commodity and the challenge of how to develop it safely while also protecting the environment is shared around the globe. There are many excellent regulators in the world and by building relationships with our national and international peers we are able to improve regulatory performance in Alberta.
In particular, this type of engagement enables the AER to

  1. learn from others and enhance regulatory practices in Alberta;
  2. share what we know and raise regulatory standards around the world; and
  3. cooperate on common regulatory challenges.

The AER is one of the largest and oldest upstream energy regulators in the world. From the Energy and Utilities Board to the Energy Resources Conservation Board to the AER, the regulator has a history that spans almost 80 years. What remains constant in the midst of an evolving mandate is the need to maintain the highest possible regulatory standards for the benefit of all Albertans, and one of the ways we do this is by engaging with peers across the country and around the globe.
