Alberta Energy Regulator Takes Over Responsibility for Environmental Assessments

Sep 30, 2014

Effective October 1, 2014, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) will assume responsibility from Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) for the environmental assessment process for upstream oil, natural gas, oil sands, and coal projects, as outlined in the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (sections 35–39) and Responsible Energy Development Act.

Applicable regulations include the

  • Environmental Assessment Regulation,
  • Environmental Assessment (Mandatory and Exempted Activities) Regulation, and
  • Specified Enactments (Jurisdiction) Regulation

Once a date is determined for the transition of a given project from ESRD to the AER, the AER environmental assessment coordinator will ensure that the company, third-party contractors, and review team are made aware of the details of the transition and project review schedule.

For questions about this bulletin, contact the AER Customer Contact Centre (CCC) by phone at  1-855-297-8311 (toll free), Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The CCC can engage the appropriate subject matter experts when necessary to ensure a timely and knowledgeable response.
