Directive 083: Hydraulic Fracturing – Subsurface Integrity

May 21, 2013

The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) announces the release of Directive 083: Hydraulic Fracturing – Subsurface Integrity, which establishes new requirements and consolidates existing requirements for hydraulic fracturing operations.

A draft of the directive was released for stakeholder feedback on December 6, 2012, and closed on February 4, 2013. A summary of the feedback and the ERCB response is available on the ERCB website.

ERCB’s Directive 027: Shallow Fracturing Operations – Restricted Operations will be rescinded and Bulletin 2012-02: Hydraulic Fracturing; Interwellbore Communication Between Energy Wells will be superseded simultaneous with the effective date of this directive.

Key Objectives of the Directive

  • Prevent the loss of well integrity at a subject well.
  • Reduce the likelihood of interwellbore communication between a subject well and an offset well.
  • Manage well control at an offset well in the event of interwellbore communication with a subject well.
  • Prevent adverse effects to nonsaline aquifers
  • Prevent impacts to water wells.
  • Prevent surface impacts.
