ERCB investigates explosion and pipeline release near Swan Hills

For immediate release

Calgary, Alberta (Jun 27, 2011)… The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) is investigating an explosion and pipeline release that occurred on Sunday, June 26th at a Pengrowth Energy facility. The incident occurred about 23 kilometres southwest of Swan Hills.

A pipeline rupture and subsequent explosion has resulted in an unconfirmed volume of light, sweet crude oil into Judy Creek and onto localized ground areas. The spill is contained and the pipeline has been shut in and depressurized.

The fire was extinguished on Sunday, June 26th.

Cleanup is well underway.  The company has placed booms and absorbent materials in Judy Creek, vacuum trucks and collection tanks are on site, and there have been no confirmed wildlife impacts to date.
