Pipeline Length

The AER regulates pipelines within Alberta’s provincial boundaries. Oil and gas pipelines that cross provincial or federal borders are regulated by the Canada Energy Regulator.

We work to ensure that AER-regulated pipelines are operated safely and responsibly by overseeing the design, construction, operation, and decommissioning of Alberta’s pipelines. The AER helps prevent incidents and holds companies accountable for their pipeline performance. To support this work, we also publish an annual Pipeline Performance Report

Cumulative kilometres of installed pipeline

This graph shows a snapshot of the total length of pipeline (in kilometres) at a certain point in time. For each of the past years, the last snapshot is taken on December 31 of that year. For the current year, the snapshot is taken once a month.
