A horizontal well is created by drilling drilling the lower part of the wellbore parallel to the zone of interest. The wellbore deviates at an angle exceeding 80 degrees from the vertical. Horizontal drilling can help increase resource recovery while minimizing surface effects.
Horizontal drilling has been used for decades; however, technological improvements have made it possible to combine horizontal drilling with hydraulic fracturing to help coax oil and natural gas out of tight rock.
Today, over half of western Canada’s wells are drilled horizontally. Read our annual reserves report, Alberta’s Energy Reserves and Supply/Demand Outlook, to learn how horizontal drilling is being used to recover some of Alberta’s energy resources.
Our horizontal well list is updated daily and includes
- well location,
- licence number,
- well name,
- licensee name,
- final drilling date,
- total depth, and
- true vertical depth.
