The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) will hold a public hearing for applications for a Coal Exploration Program (A10123772), a Deep Drill Permit (1948547) and a Temporary Diversion Licence (00497386), submitted by Northback Holdings Corporation (Northback). 

The oral in-person hearing for proceeding 444 will be conducted in two parts:

A community session for oral presentations from Limited Participants will be held at the Pincher Creek Community Hall, located at 287 Canyon Drive, Pincher Creek, Alberta, starting at 9:00 a.m. on December 3, 2024.

The community session portion of the hearing will be videocast at https://www.meetview.com/aer2024/.

The continuation of the hearing with Full Participants will be held at the AER’s Govier Hall, located at 250, 5th Street SW, Calgary Alberta, starting at 9:00 a.m. on January 14, 2025

All Full Participants must be present to register at the start of the continuation of the hearing on January 14, 2025. 

The continuation of the hearing will be videocast at https://www.meetview.com/aer2025/.

Should members of the public choose to observe the hearing in-person they should be aware that they may be captured in the live stream video. The live stream video of the hearing will not be recorded and will not be available for viewing later. The transcripts are the official record of the hearing and will be posted on the AER’s website. 

The AER issued a notice of hearing on April 10, 2024, and has received requests to participate in response to that notice.

Description of the Applications
Northback has submitted three applications under the Public Lands Act, Coal Conservation Act, and the Water Act

  • Coal Exploration Program (CEP) – A10123772 to conduct a coal exploration program on the Grassy Mountain Deposit, located north of Blairmore, Alberta.
  • Deep Drill Permit (DDP) – 1948547 to drill to depths deeper than 150 metres and no deeper that 550 metres on a combination of Crown land and Northback’s privately owned land, in support of the coal exploration program.
  • Temporary Diversion Licence (TDL – 00497386) for 1500 m3 of water to support drilling activities associated with the coal exploration program.
