Most of Alberta’s precipitation and snowmelt occur during May and June, increasing the risk of flooding. However, flooding can occur anytime between early spring and late fall. Flooding over industrial sites can seriously affect the environment, particularly soils, and damage on-site structures, equipment, and pipeline crossings within watercourses or water bodies.
We remind licensees of their responsibility to take appropriate precautions to ensure public safety and environmental protection by minimizing the potential operational impacts of flooding hazards. All licensees must be aware of the potential for site and equipment damage from flooding and physically inspect and assess any sites and equipment that have or may potentially be affected. Licensees should have procedures in place for monitoring flood advisories, storm forecasts, runoff, and snowmelt.
If a state of local emergency (SOLE) is declared, licensees must comply with any evacuation order issued by provincial or local authorities. Once the SOLE or evacuation order has been rescinded or cancelled, comply with the provincial or local authority’s re-entry process.
