We are responsible for ensuring that companies develop Alberta’s energy and mineral resources safely and responsibly. This includes holding companies accountable for their performance.
Purpose of the Industry Performance Program
The program objectives are to drive companies to improve their performance, keep them accountable for their decisions and actions, and provide performance information to Albertans. Under the program, we
- measure, evaluate, and report on the energy and mineral resource development activities we regulate;
- provide information about how industry is doing;
- help companies improve their performance; and
- assess the effectiveness of our regulatory tools and requirements.
How It Works
We evaluate industry performance on many measures and their performance against target outcomes and priorities established by the Government of Alberta’s policies. Where needed, we adjust our requirements to mitigate risk and achieve the outcomes Albertans expect: public safety, environmental protection, resource conservation, and economic benefits.
The industry performance program complements our requirements and compliance assurance program, which helps to ensure companies develop energy and mineral resources safely and responsibly.
Performance Reports
We update our industry performance reports each year. Click on a report to learn how companies in Alberta are performing:
Holding Poor Performers Accountable
Companies that perform poorly under the program receive more attention. For example, if a company is not performing well, we conduct more frequent inspections and audits. Our staff will also educate the company about our requirements, expectations, and industry best practices.
If we find that a company is breaking the rules, we may take action by using one or more of our compliance and enforcement tools. Our tools might include warning letters, administrative penalties, orders, or prosecution.
