Legal Header

A horizontal well is created by drilling the lower part of the wellbore parallel to the zone of interest. These wells must be drilled directionally at an angle exceeding 80 degrees. Horizontal drilling can help increase resource recovery while minimizing surface impacts.

While horizontal drilling has been used for decades, technological improvements have made it possible to combine horizontal drilling with hydraulic fracturing to help coax oil and natural gas out of tight rock.

Today, more than half of western Canada’s wells are being drilled horizontally. Read our annual reserves report, Alberta’s Energy Reserves and Supply/Demand Outlook, to learn how horizontal drilling is being used to recover some of Alberta’s energy resources.
