Energy companies in Alberta must test their wells regularly to
- measure each well’s productivity and performance over time,
- manage oil and gas reservoirs,
- identify trapped resources beneath the surface, and
- meet reservoir production and pressure requirements.
Companies must follow the technical procedures listed in our requirements to perform a high-quality well test. Companies are required to submit their test results to us.
Well Testing Requirements
- Directive 017: Measurement Requirements for Oil and Gas Operations
- Directive 034: Gas Well Testing, Theory and Practice
- Directive 040: Pressure and Deliverability Testing Oil and Gas Wells
Orders
In some parts of Alberta, we have special regulatory requirements for development, which are set out in subsurface orders. These orders adapt our subsurface regulatory requirements for specific geological zones in specific geographic areas to suit the energy resource and the resource development practices used in an area.
Compliance and Enforcement
We conduct regular inspections and audits to ensure that companies are following our requirements. If we find that a company is not complying, we will take the appropriate compliance and enforcement actions and share our findings on our Compliance Dashboard.
